Initiating PowerPlans
Initiating PowerPlans
2012
In this demonstration you learn how to order and initiate a PowerPlan.
PowerPlans combine a group of orders into a single order to expedite the process. To add a PowerPlan to a patient's medical record, you will search for the specific plan in the Orders window just as you would an individual orderable.
From the Inpatient Summary section,
1. Click the Add button next to the New Order Entry section header.
The Orders menu section opens to the Add Order window.
2. Type admission.
You will work with the General Admission PowerPlan for today’s practice. To select the plan, position your cursor over the name until it turns blue and underlined.
3. Click to select and add the PowerPlan to the patient’s orders.
4. Click Done to close the Add Order window.
As a user of PowerPlans, you can customize the built plan as needed for the care of your patient. Once a PowerPlan has been selected, additions can be made before saving the PowerPlan to the patient’s chart.
The following actions will demonstrate how to select and deselect individual components of the plan.
On the Menu, click the Push Pin to expand the Orders view.
You have already selected the General Admission PowerPlan PowerPlan to the Orders view. You are now open to the patient’s Orders window and able to view all the components of the PowerPlan. Notice some of the components are already preselected for items almost always ordered. For example, the Admit Patient, Resuscitation Status, and Vital Signs orders already have a check mark in front of the order names. To indicate orders you want to place, select the check box that precedes the order name. If you decide a selected order is not appropriate for the current patient, deselect the order by clicking to remove the check mark.
Practice now selecting and deselecting components of the PowerPlan.
5. Select the check box in front of the Bedrest w/ Bathroom Privileges, Intake and Output, and Diabetic Diet orders to select these orders as part of the plan.
6. Deselect the check box in front of the VTE order.
Notice that the VTE order is no longer selected as part of the plan.
7. Select the order for Acetaminophen.
8. Press the down arrow button next to the order sentence for Acetaminophen.
9. Select the order sentence 0.5mg, Tablet, Oral, PRN, Fever.
10. Now scroll down to find and select the CBC order as part of this plan.
You have modified the PowerPlan to fit your patient’s plan of care. You are ready to move forward with signing the plan.
11. Click the initiate button to indicate that you want these orders to be activated once you sign the plan.
As a PowerPlan user you can build a plan for your patient before they are admitted. In that case, the orders are only signed to be initiated at the time of that visit. For example, you have a patient returning to surgery next week. The General Surgery Admission PowerPlan would already be signed ready for the nurse to initiate at the time of the patient’s arrival.
In the next lesson you will continue working with the General Admission PowerPlan.
